Probiotic pouch stability: strain, method and pack
A useful probiotic specification identifies the strain, viable-count method, measurement timing and storage conditions.

Identify the live culture
Use a strain designation that can be linked to the supplier documentation and any relevant evidence. Species-level naming alone may leave the project unable to connect the material with a studied strain. Record allergens, carriers, storage requirements and handling constraints alongside the culture identity.
Count at meaningful time points
A release count and an end-of-shelf-life count answer different questions. Define how organisms are recovered from the pouch matrix and whether the method measures the intended viable population. A numerical result without its method and timing is difficult to interpret. Plan time points and acceptance criteria before a shelf-life claim is made.
Package for the proposed storage
Moisture, oxygen, temperature and repeated opening may influence viability. Compare the final formula in the actual pack, including consumer opening where relevant. A postbiotic route requires its own identity and evidence; it cannot be described as live probiotic CFU. Oral-microbiome wording also needs evidence appropriate to the specific product and claim.
Working checklist
| Record | Define | Avoid |
|---|---|---|
| Strain | Designation and supplier documentation | Species name as the whole dossier |
| Method | Matrix recovery and viable count | Unspecified count figures |
| Timing | Release and end of shelf life | Manufacture count as expiry guarantee |
| Storage | Temperature, moisture and pack | Testing powder while claiming a finished can |
| Alternative | Postbiotic identity and evidence | Live CFU terminology for non-live material |
Use this in your project
Keep this worksheet with a project code, version and review date. Assign an owner to each unresolved item and link the response to the relevant sample, supplier document or test report. Share a concise brief through our project enquiry before transferring confidential files. The result of review determines the final scope, specification, quotation and next decision.

Project questions
Can I use this as a finished product specification?
Use it as a development checklist. A final specification needs defined methods, acceptance criteria, approved versions and responsibilities matched to your project.
What should I send first?
Send the target country, intended use, ingredient or flavor direction, preferred pack and estimated quantity. Detailed confidential material can follow through an agreed controlled channel.
